PISIDIA. Sagalassus. Valerian I, with Gallienus, 253-260. '10 Assaria' (Bronze, 39 mm, 31.18 g, 7 h). AY K ΠO Λ OYAΛЄ[PIANOC ...] - A K Π [...] Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gallienus, on the left, facing laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Valerian I, on the right; between them, value mark I. Rev. ΦIΛH / KЄ CYN/MAXOC PΩ/MЄΩN (sic!) within wreath; around, CAΓAΛACCЄΩN ΠPOTHC ΠICIΔIAC. BMC -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Leypold -. SNG München -. SNG Paris -. SNG PFPS -. SNG Righetti -. SNG von Aulock -. Apparently unpublished and unique, a highly interesting and very impressive issue. Minor doubling on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

The reverse legend of this very interesting issue translates as: '(coin of) the Sagalasseans, first (city) of Pisidia, friend and ally of the Romans'. The obverse value mark of I is that of a normal 10 assaria, but the dynastic portraits, the celebratory reverse and the fact that the size and weight are way above normal 10 assariae shows that it certainly was struck as a medallion. For a connected issue from Perge, see above, lot 597.
