Russia "Smallpox Vaccine" Specimen Silver Medal 1826
Diakov-462.2 (R2), Smirnov-429/b, 40mm. Unsigned. Obv. Crowned and mantled bust of Catherine II right. Rev. A female figure standing, with her outstretched arms over seven children. Even thought this has a portrait of Catherine II, the award was instituted in 1826, under Nicholas I, as an award medal for those most prominent in smallpox inoculations. Superbly struck, with high relief and a few light contact marks. The fields are mirrored, with gray and russet toning. Rare. Included is a photo certificate #5528 from the Moscow Historical Museum.
