Russia - Medal "200th Anniversary of Senate 1911"
Sm# 1431; Diakov# 1512; Bronze 82.7 mm.; Within a beaded circle: Conjoined heads of Nicholas II and Peter the Great l., Monomach's fur-cap above, orb and crossed swords below / Minerva stands and Justice sits before the Senate building, Imperial eagle above, equestrian Peter the Great monument at left above anniversary dates. Signed in tiny letters within the inner circle at left: Idea of I.D. Blinov , and at right: drawn, modeled and engraved by A. Griliches, Jr. This signature is very unusual in its emphasis and wording and may be unique in Russian medallic work. Original, stately, well-designed and well-executed, this medal was so highly regarded, according to Zvi Griliches and E. S. Shchukina in "The Griliches Engravers, Father and Son" (RNS, 1999), that the Mint recommended the artist for a special promotion to Collegial Assessor. The request, though, was denied because the eligibility range of a senior medalist did not reach this rank.
