Caracalla Ӕ33 of Cotiaeum, Phrygia. AD 198-217. G. Julius Codratus, archon. AVT K M AVPH CЄVHPOC ANTΩNЄINOC, laureate and cuirassed bust right, seen from rear / ЄΠI Γ IOVΛ KOΔPA TOVA PX, Ariadne reclining left within the grotto of Naxos, approached by Dionysos, who holds filleted thyrsos; between them, Eros advancing right; KOTIAЄΩN in exergue. The scene portrayed on the reverse of this coin is the discovery by Dionysos of Ariadne asleep in Naxos after her desertion by Theseus. The composition closely follows that of a mosaic found at the ruins of Volubilis near the city of Meknes, Morocco, dating to the Roman imperial period.
