The scene portrayed on the reverse of this coin is the discovery by Dionysos of Ariadne asleep in Naxos after her desertion by Theseus. The composition closely follows that of a mosaic found at the ruins of Volubilis near the city of Meknes, Morocco, dating to the Roman imperial period.
