Forced to accept the imperial crown, the tax-collector Theodosius became emperor in summer AD 715. With no ability to lead the state, and no inclination, he was deposed by a powerful general who went on to found a dynasty as Leo III 'the Isaurian', a period which saw fierce fighting against an Arab onslaught, and the destruction of many great works of art during the Iconoclast Controversy.
