China, Han Dynasty, 2nd Century BC - 2nd Century ADrnLot of twelve gold plated parasol fittings. Measuring 3.5 to 4 cm in length. This group has not been cleaned but the gold plating is clearly evident under the patina in spots.rnThese fittings are called gaigongmao in Chinese; they went on the top of the parasol used atop a horse-driven chariot. The Terracotta Army, from ca. 210 BC, includes a carriage with an umbrella affixed to its side and exhibiting these exact fittings. China is our oldest known reference point for folding umbrellas. A fully gilded single example of one of these fittings sold for 2500 USD at Sotheby's in 2013.
