(x) Kings of All England, Eadgar (959-975), Halfpenny, 0.48g, 6h, Floral type, + eadgar rex around small cross in solid inner circle, rev. double floral spray on a solid horizontal line which divides the field, letters n-d beneath each spray, ælfstan and a rosette of pellets below (N.762 but this moneyer not noted; S,1140), two edge chips and hairline crack between, but otherwise better than very fine, still a pleasing coin, extremely rare, the moneyer unrecorded for the denomination but known for Chester and Weardburh.
Provenance:
Baldwin, auction 9, 8 October 1996, lot 1785
Found in discarded soil from river dredging at Bath, 1973. The type was modelled on the Flower type of Edward the Elder by the moneyer Eofermund, the last two letters of whose name were shown either side of the stem. Here the first letter is reproduced faithfully, the second less accurately.
Estimate: £1,500.00 - £2,000.00
