From the early 5th century BC Katane was under Syracusan control. In 476 BC Hieron I transferred the populations of Katane and Naxos to Leontinoi, renamed Katane as Aitna, and settled a new foundation of 10,000 oiketores from the Peloponnesos and Syracuse. This new polis was responsible for some of the most impressive coins in antiquity.
