CHINA. Honan. Pattern 500 Cash, ND (ca. 1927-28). PCGS SP-62 BN Secure Holder.
CCC-559; Duan-2692; CL-HON.69; Hsu-445a. Tied for finest certified at PCGS with only one other example. An EXTREMELY RARE type from a reported mintage of only 12 pieces. Struck as a commemorative for the Nationalist government, it stands as one of the highest denomination Chinese Copper coins ever made and was not inserted into circulation for the concern of rising inflation. The obverse design displays the crossed Nationalist flags, the multi-pointed star of the Kuomintang, "Republic of China" above, "500 CASH" below, floral sprays to right and left, all within elaborate border; Reverse: Value (500 Cash) within floral wreath, elaborate border around. This is the third example of this type that we have handled with the other two being one we sold in our August Hong Kong auction 2014, lot 41281 graded PCGS SP-50 which had also been tin plated (presumably to pass into circulation as a dollar). With the other example being part of the Wa She Wong collection in our inaugural Hong Kong auction December 2010 Lot # 147 graded NGC MS-63 BN. By technical comparison of the grades the present example is not as high of a grade as the Wa She Wong specimen, but does have a better strike with better definition of the details. The present example is also far superior to the one we sold in 2014. Well struck with good definition of the fine details displaying a lovely smooth chocolate patina throughout. Only minor trivial marks mentioned for accuracy. A chance to acquire a high grade iconic struck Chinese copper coin with a fabulous provenance. PCGS SP-62 BN Secure Holder.
