CHINA. Blank & Experiment Gold Standard Planchets, ca. 1920-34.
15.51-37.58 mm; 1.12-25.51 gms. Approximately 95 pieces in lot, 81 all different with 14 duplicates. An interesting assortment of varying compositions and diameters probably prepared at the Philadelphia mint under the direction of Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock to the specifications of Chief Mechanical engineer Clifford Hewitt of the Shanghai mint. After they were prepared they were most likely sent to Hewitt for examination in Shanghai. The alloy compositions include pure Nickel, pure Copper, Copper-Nickel, Silver-Copper, Copper-Zinc, Iron-Copper, Nickel-Iron, Copper-Zinc-Tin, Silver-Copper-Tin and Copper-Silver-Nickel-Zinc. These planchets can be further categorized as Type I, raw planchets, and Type II, with upset rim or other edge device. There are four(4) Copper-Zinc-Tin planchets that have a series of concentric circles on both obverse and reverse, all would be considered Type II as they have a grooved edge. There are eight(8) blank planchets with the composition written in India ink, six(6) solid Type I and two(2) with holes Type II. There are five(5) with some sort of inscription on them, two(2) type I and three(3) type II. There are twenty-eight(28) with holes, three(3) type I and twenty five(25) type II. There are fifty(50) completely blank planchets, twenty-nine(29) Type I and twenty-one(21) Type II. Based on the planchet weight, diameter and composition these were probably for one Cent, 1/2 Cent and 1/4 Cent denominations. Very interesting and fully worthy of further in depth research. Includes Hewitt's hand written envelopes. Most are toned to one degree or another. All are graded by PCGS. PCGS MS-60 Secure Holder to MS-64 BN Secure Holder.
