40 mm. L&M-935; Wurzbach-5175. RARE. Struck to commemorate the state visit of Li Huang Chang (Li Hongzhang) to Hamburg. Struck in Germany, the medal features a well executed facing portrait, with the Hamburg coat of arms on the reverse. Li Huang Chang (15 February 1823 - 7 November 1901) was a Chinese politician, general and diplomat of the late Qing dynasty. He quelled several major rebellions and served in important positions within the Qing imperial court, including the Viceroy of Chihli Province. Struck in Germany, the medal features a well executed facing portrait, with the Hamburg coat of arms on the reverse. Easily one of the finest examples extant, and a medal that combines both beauty and great historical significance. Sharply struck with attractive tone and strong underlying luster. NGC MS-64.
