John Smart (1741-1811), uniface copper medal, by John Kirk after Joachim Smith, 36.5mm., ioh smart pict effig minut, bust right (BHM 153; Eimer 764), extremely fine, rare.
John Smart was to become a celebrated 18th Century miniaturist painter, exhibiting his sketches and more distinctive ivory watercolour paintings through the Incorporated Society of Artists between 1762 and 1783. He would go on to be elected as Director to this Society in 1773 and subsequently its President in 1778. Whilst itself undated, the medal has variously been argued to have been struck around this time to commemorate one or perhaps even both of these appointments.
