Britain, East Anglian Region. Iceni. Antedios. Ca. A.D. 10-30(?). AR 1/2 unit (15 mm, 0.99 g). Antedios Ant-D Bar type. Double crescent emblem on vertical wreath / (ANT)D below, horse with large oval head, grain-ear mane, and pellet for eye right; above, pelletal sun; below, pellet triad. ABC 1645; Van Arsdell 700; BMC 3800-4025; SCBC 441. Nicely toned. Good very fine.

A contemporary of Cunobelinus, Antedios was one of the first Icenian kings to stamp his name on coins. Otherwise his coinage is conservative, never depicting a head but instead employing the double crescent and grain ear motif of the Catuvellauni. The type was to persist on Icenian coinage for another half century or longer, and indeed along with the ubiquitous horse of the reverse, became the main tribal emblem of the Iceni.
