THRACE, Mesambria. Circa 275/50-225 BC. AR Tetradrachm (31.5mm, 16.45 g, 1h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; crested Corinthian helmet right in left field, monogram below throne. Karayotov I 7 var. (O5/R– [unlisted rev. die]); Price 994 var. (position of monogram); HGC 3, 1567. VF, toned, scuff under tone on obverse. Apparently unique variety.

From the Colin E. Pitchfork Collection. Ex CNG 58 (19 September 2001), lot 212.

This coin is has the same monogram as Price 994, but it is moved from the left field to below the throne. It is obverse die linked to Karayotov cat. no. 18 (die combination 7), which is an example of Price 994 (though Karayotov's rendition of the monogram has a small mistake).
