Both Ferguson brothers were at one time members of Parliament. In their youth the brothers were painted by Sir Henry Raeburn as 'The Archers'. Robert Ferguson infamously had an affair with Mary Nisbet, Countess of Elgin, wife of Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl, with whom she had had a son and three daughters. The Earl sued Ferguson in both England and Scotland and won £10,000. Ferguson married her on 20 April 1808.
