Commemorative Medals, Foreign Medals, Belgium, Pierre de Soete (1886-1948), sculptor, self-portrait, bronze proof plaquette, A MES AMIS, 1931, struck with additional border, de Soete seated half-length to l., cigarette in hand, emblems of sculpting inset at top r., stamped below 'Fisch & Cie' and emblem, also 'Epreuve d'artiste', 95 x 70mm., very fine
The plaquette has a pencilled dedication to a Henri Harty, perhaps Henri Louis Harty (1877-1970); dated 1-1-43, it fills the reverse. De Soete is considered one of the leading sculptors of the early 20th century in Belgium. In 1927 he travelled to the United States to compete in the Gordon Bennett Cup ballooning competition. He is best remembered for his car mascots for the Belgian car manufacturer Minerva and the controversial plaque for the library of the University of Louvain, 'Furore Teutonico Diruta...' (destroyed by German fury), which was never erected.
