The Accademia di San Luca was founded in 1593 as an association of artists in Rome, under the directorship of Federico Zuccari, with the purpose of elevating the work of 'artists', which included painters, sculptors and architects, above that of mere craftsmen. The reverse image was designed by Giovanni Hamerani in 1694, taken from a painting by il Guercino [Giovanni Francesco Barbieri], and was used for the first time for the Centenary Competition in 1695. The competition was intended as an annual event but was not always so. The prizes, when awarded, were given in three classes in the three disciplines of painting, sculpture and architecture. Whilst the Michael Hall Collection included four variations of the prize medals, none was dated 1704.
