The medal was commissioned by the Doge's son, Cardinal (1626) Federico Corner (1579-1653), who was to be the Patriarch of Venice from 1631-1644; his brother was Francesco Corner, who had the shortest rule of any Doge (19 days, 17 May to 5 June 1656).
