Alexander and his wife, Queen Draga (Draga Obrenović, née Lunjevica, formerly Mašin) were assassinated on June 11, 1903, in the Royal Palace. Both were shot, their bodies mutilated and disembowelled and thrown from a second floor window. They were later buried in St. Mark's Church (the church depicted on the medal).
