Commemorative Medals, Foreign Medals, Sweden, Polar Exploration, the doomed Salomon August Andrée polar balloon flight, 1897, bronze medal, 1930, by A. Ohlson, conjoined heads of S. A. Andrée, Nils Strindberg and Knut Fraenkel r., rev. an eagle (Andrée's ballon was named Ornen – Eagle) soars above a polar map showing the ballon's proposed route and actual route to the crash site, 56mm. (Malpas - ; Button - ), very fine
All three members of the expedition perished following the balloon crash and their remains were only discovered by chance in 1930, by the Norwegian steamer Bratvaag on a seal and walrus hunt off White Island on the far northeastern tip of Spitsbergen.
