Macedonian Kingdom, Alexander III The Great. Tetradrachm.
c. 305-300 BC. Tetradrachm, 16.36g (12h). Obv: Head of Heracles right, wearing skin of lion's head with mane. Rx: AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left holding eagle and scepter, X in left field, Φ under seat. Price 3192. WSM p. 84, 2, pl. XIV.4 (same obv. die). SC 28.1a. Very rare: this small issue of Alexander tetradrachms comes from only two obverse dies. Ex Philip T. Ashton Collection. Newell attributed this small issue to Antigoneia, a city founded by Antigonus in 306 BC, but abandoned just five years later. For stylistic reasons Price would prefer an attribution to Seleuceia Pieria or Seleuceia ad Tigrum, under the rule of Seleucus I. aEF.
