Lycia, Masicytes. Hemidrachm.
42 BC, under BRUTUS. Hemidrachm, 1.86g (12h). Obv: Head of Apollo right, Λ - Y across lower field. Rx: M - A across field, Lyre, filleted branch in lower right field. Troxell 92 (11 spec.). RPC 3302. Sear 5295 var. Ex Philip T. Ashton Collection. Ex Berk 125, 27 February 2002, lot 347. For the attribution of this issue to Brutus after his conquest of Lycia, see Troxell, Coinage of the Lycian League, pp. 179-180 and pl. 16. Two denarii of Brutus are closely connected to our coin: Crawford 503/1 uses an exactly similar head of Apollo as obverse type, and Crawford 501/1 shows a lyre and a filleted branch on reverse, like the Lycian hemidrachm. After conquering Lycia, then, Brutus struck there not only Lycian League hemidrachms like our coin, but also Roman denarii using the same or similar coin types and in one case the same engravers. Toned aEF.
