198-217 AD. Denarius, 3.64g (7h). Rome, 208 AD. Obv: ANTONINVS - PIVS AVG Head laureate right. Rx: PROF in exergue, PONTIF TR P XI COS III around, Caracalla, laureate and in military dress, on horse stepping right, holding spear pointing diagonally upward. BM 572. Cohen 511 (10 Fr.). RIC 107 (S).The scarcer variant without enemy before the horse: sixteen specimens in Reka Devnia hoard. Ex Philip T. Ashton Collection. Acquired in London, June 2001. This reverse type commemorates Caracalla's departure from Rome along with Septimius Severus and Geta on their British expedition. This departure is undated in the written sources, but the coins clearly assign it to 208 AD (TR P XI for Caracalla, TR P XVI for Septimius Severus). Mint State.
