275-215 BC. Trichalkon, 0.77g (6h). Obv: Head of Athena left wearing Corinthian helmet. Rx: ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ / Three pellets and X•III / AΦ. SNG ANS 907. De Luynes Coll. 1399. Ex Philip T. Ashton Collection. Ex Berk 196, 4 February 2016, lot 51. In the interpretation of W. Giesecke, the value of this scarce trichalkon is indicated not only by the three pellets on the reverse, but also by the letters X•III, the X being the Greek letter chi standing for "chalkoi", while III is the Roman numeral for "three", a curious mixture of Greek and Latin. aVF.
