France
Louis XIIII 5 Sols 1670-A AU50 NGC, Br-502. Medium gray, with splashes of orange and blue in the periphery. Lightly struck in the upper left portion of the shield, as usual.
The 1670 French Colonial coinage was authorized by an edict of King Louis XIV for use in New France, Acadia, the French settlements in Newfoundland and the French West Indies. While only a modest number of these pieces can have circulated in what is now Canada, they continue to gain in popularity with collectors in both Canada and the United States. The 5 sol coinage is rare, particularly in higher grades.
