Louis XV. Trio of Franco-American Jetons,
1) 1751 Unc., Br-510, Lecompte-105, bronze, plain, beveled edge stamped BRONZE, medal alignment, 29.6 mm, 9.29 gm. Short bust in civil garb., open coat with 2 buttons showing, JCR (for Joseph-Charles Röettiers) in script monogram below (Raymond Obv. B) / Indian woman with bow & quiver standing beside growing lilies, date below. Clearly a restrike; however, the drawing in the 1751 issue of Mercure De France suggests that the obverse on this piece is the original. Absent from both the Ford and Newman collections. Reflective surfaces below red and brown toning.
2) 1752 XF, Br-511, Lecompte-110, copper, plain, beveled edge, medal alignment, 28.7 mm, 7.47 gm. Crowned arms of the French West Indies Co., a crowned palm tree in a field of gold, Indian chiefs armed with clubs as supporters, broad scrolls beneath, the right of which has DV (for Jean Duvivier) (Raymond Obv. II), date below / Draped figure of Mercury, holding caduceus in right hand, flying left over sea, 1852 below. Die crack on the obverse from a denticle, through the club to the left-hand man's arm. Even, brown surfaces with the reverse slightly off center to the top. Ex. James Stack collection (Stack's Bowers, Mar. 1995, lot 24).
3) 1748/1752 AU, Br-Unl., Lecompte-112a var., silver, reeded edge, coinage alignment, 28.4 mm, 7.07 gm. Mule: Arms of the French West Indies Co., a crowned palm tree in a field of gold, Indian chiefs armed with clubs as supporters, broad scrolls beneath, the right of which has DV (for Jean Duvivier) (Raymond Obv. II), / Arms of the City of Nantes, a crowned shield bearing a ship, lilies above, date below. Medium gray, with no flaws noted. All examples of this mule listed in Lecompte have medal alignment.
