France
Louis XV. Pair of Franco-American Jetons,
1) 1752 XF, Br-Unl., Lecompte-112c var., copper, plain, raw edge, coinage alignment, 28.4 mm, 6.81 gm. Mule: Arms of the French West Indies Co., a crowned palm tree in a field of gold, Indian chiefs armed with clubs as supporters, broad scrolls beneath, the right of which has DV (for Jean Duvivier) (Raymond Obv. II), / Arms of the City of Nantes, a crowned shield bearing a ship, lilies above, date below. Medium brown with a small reddish stain at the lower left reverse. As all examples of this mule we have seen are coinage alignment, we assume Lecompte's attribution of medal alignment is in error.
2) 1753 Unc.. Br-513, Lecompte-128, copper, plain, beveled edge, medal alignment, 29.0 mm, 8.40 gm. Undraped bust right, with truncation line arching smoothly upward, hair flowing and filleted, FM (for François Marteau) below (Raymond Obv. S) / Radiant sun above joined eastern & western hemispheres, date below. Reverse slightly off center low.
