Nova Scotia.  TRADE & NAVIGATION Penny Token 1814 AU55 Brown NGC, Br-962, probably NS20B2. Plain edge, coinage alignment, small 8 in date, and as such very rare (the only example seen by us). 18.60 gm. From seriously-rusted dies. This piece doesn't exactly correspond to any of the varieties in the Charlton catalog. The rarest variety (NS-20B2), marked "NONE CERTIFIED - EXTREMELY RARE", is described as being the same as B1 except for its die alignment (coinage). The present piece is clearly from Halliday dies, as opposed to NS-20B3, which is definitely a much later copy not by Halliday. In fact the present piece seems to be from the original Halliday dies in a state so deteriorated that the overdate no longer shows. We think it most likely that this piece is the rare NS-20B2 and the description in the Charlton catalog is incorrect. Similarly, we disagree with NGC's attribution of this piece as a NS-20B3.
