2)  STARR & SHANNON 1/2 Penny Token 1815 XF, Br-884, NS-11A3.  Thick flan, engrailed edge, 7.18 gm.
3)  COMMERCIAL CHANGE 1/2 Penny Token 1815 MS63 Brown NGC, Br-885, NS-12, 5.78 gm.

Contemporary newspaper accounts from the 1815-16 period suggest that Starr & Shannon was one of the firms that engaged in a ruthless scheme to profit by issuing irredemable tokens.  A firm would initially issue a token bearing its name, which would be redeemed for legal coin on demand.  After the public was used to the design, the firm would issue an anonymous lookalike, with a word or phrase replacing the firm's name.  When the lookalike version was presented for redemption, the firm would refuse redemption because the token didn't bear their name.  The finest example we've seen, with glossy brown surfaces and patches of mint-red around the legends.
