Newfoundland. Ship / 1858 "Double H" 1/2 Penny Token, Br-954 VF Details (Rev Tooled) NGC, NF-3A1 var., 4.70 gm. Open 5 in date, as on NF-3A1, but with a new obverse, not previously recorded for the type. The "normal" obverse for Br-954 has no H initials in the waves below the ship and is similar (but not identical) to some of the Ships Colonies & Commerce (Br-997) obverses. The present piece, on the other hand, is an important link to the Br-997 series. It displays the "double H" obverse of Lees-34-38. The upper, incuse H is clear, but the lower H is virtually obliterated by wear. This piece, so far the only one known, constitutes an important third variety of an already very scarce type.
