Pair of SHIPS COLONIES & COMMERCE 1/2 Penny Tokens ND, Lees-3,
1) Fine,PE-10-3A1, medal alignment. Thick flan, 7.28 gm. Haxby plate piece.
2) F-VF, some rev. scratches. PE-10-3A3, coinage alignment. Thin flan, 3.02 gm. Partly double-struck reverse.
This enigmatic piece seems to be a concocted "mint error" that can only have been produced by the coiner. The only way it could have been made was to take a normally-struck piece, place it on its obverse, rest the reverse die over part of the reverse side and give the die a blow. That would cause the reverse doubling and flatten out part of the obverse opposite the die. An even bigger question than how it was made, is why it was made. Whatever the reason, this piece is not unique. We have seen a couple of similar "errors".
