SHIPS COLONIES & COMMERCE 1/2 Penny Token ND, Lees-4 XF40 Brown NGC, Br-997, PE-10-4, 3.71 gm. Crudely struck, as normal, with soft strike on both sides, and light marks. Rare.
In his classic 1910 monograph on the Blacksmith coppers, Howland Wood did not include any of the cruder varieties of the Ships Colonies & Commerce tokens, Breton-997. However, two varieties, Lees-4 and Lees-5, can probably be classed as Blacksmiths. They share a common reverse that differs from the rest of the Br-997 varieties in having the lettering on the reverse cut in with a graver, rather than punched in with individual letter punches. Furthermore, Lees-4 and Lees-5 lack rim beads on the reverse. Lees-4 is very scarce; Lees-5 is rare.
