Lower Canada. Counterfeit of Bout De L'Isle Breton-536 Made For Collectors c. 1890 XF45 Brown NGC, BT-17, 8.95 gm. Clipped. Made from well-engraved dies, copying the original designs. Rare.
Only two of the original varieties had been copied and produced in very limited quantities when the fraud was discovered. Courteau exposed the counterfeiter as a prominent Ottawa-area collector, Victor Morin. The counterfeits can easily be identified by two features. The first is the weight; the counterfeits run to nearly 9 grams, whereas the originals weigh 7.5 grams or less. The other obvious point of divergence from the originals is a five-pointed instead of a six-pointed star on the obverse. The counterfeits are as rare as the originals and are avidly collected.
