Lower Canada. Lauzon Ferry Token 4 Pence (8 Sols) 1821 XF Details (Scratches) NGC, Br-560, TR-2A. White metal, 6.58 gm. Original version without counterstamp. Gray patina, with noticeable scratches and edge flaws. The strike is sharp for the issue, with traces of corrosion. Very rare.
The original owner of the steam ferry Lauzon, which ran between Quebec and Point Levi, was John Goudie. The tokens were tickets for a trip on the ferry. When the ferry passed to a new owner, J. McKenzie, the tokens were counterstamped J McK in incuse letters. And, when the ferry was sold a second time, the new owner counterstamped his initials, J T, in raised letters onto the tokens. Being made of white metal many of the surviving examples of these tokens are damaged.
