Lower Canada. FIELD MARSHAL WELLINGTON Penny Token ND, Breton-970 MS61 Brown NGC, Br-970, WE-4A2, 17.56 gm. Plain edge, with slight residue of the engrailed edge of the Guppy undertype. Parts of the Guppy ship's reverse legend show on Wellington's face and on the reverse a ghost of the Guppy ship crosses the field and Britannia's bodice. A superb example with bold strike and luster.
This type again brings up the issue of edge varieties. Collectors have traditionally recognized three varieties: engrailed edge, reeded edge and plain edge. Our experience is that there are two basic modules: a complete, strong engrailed edge and a basically rounded plain edge, where there are slight hints of the engrailed or reeded edge originally present on the undertype Guppy token. It seems entirely plausible that examples of a "pure" plain edge are simply ones on which miniscule traces of the original edge graining have worn off.
