Lower Canada.  gold Wellington Peninsular 1/2 Penny Token ND (c. 1812) UNC Details (Holed, Reverse Rim Filed) NGC, Br-987, WE-11A2, Courteau-7, Withers-1526c.  Small tuft of hair at the back of Wellington's head. Reeded edge, diagonally.  A tiny hole for suspension has been drilled at the top and the reverse rim has a small edge knock at 10 o'clock that has been filed, presumably to remove a burr.  The fields show signs of light handling.  Of the highest rarity!  A specific gravity test has been performed on this piece here at Heritage, and we are 100% certain that this is a gold token. We have had someone online ask us how we know this piece is gold, and not gold-plated. The test was absolutely specific for this piece being gold. I also feel certain that NGC has performed the specific gravity test, as they have certified it as gold, and they not do that lightly.

It is said that J.K. Picard struck a single example of his Wellington Peninsular halfpenny in gold, for presentation to the Prince Regent (later George IV).  The present piece surfaced in Europe a few years ago and Mr. Robins bought it.  Whether this is the piece given to the Prince Regent is unclear; however, it is the only gold example we have traced. Whoever had it, this piece was apparently worn for a time as a pendant.  This is yet another of Mr. Robins' treasures that could well become unavailable for many years after this sale.
