Lower Canada. Bust & Harp 1/2 Penny Token 1820/5 XF40 Brown NGC, Br-1012, LC-60A2, Courteau-22, 5.77 gm. Under normal circumstances an overdate proceeds in the forward direction; that is, the altered date is later than the original date. The situation for this famous token is just the opposite: the date was altered from 1825 to 1820 (as evidenced by the 0 being in higher relief than the 5). The reason for this unusual circumstance is outlined for the previous lot. The mint wished to antidate the die to make a piece that would still be legal under existing Canadian law. The 1820/5 overdate is rare, even more so than the plain 1825 pieces. The present example is quite nice for the type and should attract spirited bidding.
