Lower Canada. Montreal Ropery 1/2 Penny Token ND, Br-564 VF25 Brown NGC, Br-564, LC-18, 7.60 gm. Even, overall brown tone. The only detractions, all minor, are two small verdigris spots on the obverse, a few shallow marks in the reverse field and a couple of trivial edge bumps. Overall the appearance is still very pleasing. Only about 15 examples survive and most are either tied up in museums or closely held by collectors and are not available. A classic Canadian token rarity.
Owen's Ropery was established in Montreal c. 1824 and only operated about a year before Owen sold to a larger competitor, the Canada Cordage Co. The rarity of Owen's token doubtless relates to this fact. It is more than a little interesting that the ship on the Montreal Ropery token closely resembles that on the unique New Brunswick St. John's token, NB-5. The dies are not identical, but the detail is close enough to suggest that the same engraver cut both dies.
