Blacksmith 1/2 Penny Token 17--, Wood-38 VF, BL-Unl. Copper, 4.59 gm. Head facing right with almond-shaped eye, long nose, and smile / Harp. Exceptional condition for this rare variety.
The original drawing in Wood's monograph depicts an obverse bust with a partial outline and no internal detail, leading to some confusion as to the exact design of the variety. However, the Canadian National Currency Collection has what must be the very piece Wood used for his original drawings. The general outline details fit well and the interruption of the outline drawing at the bust tip neatly corresponds to a hole in the piece. The present example exactly matches the outlines of both the Wood drawing and the Bank of Canada piece and provides us with much of the internal detail missing from both. Possibly the finest known example of this elusive variety.
