Blacksmith-Style Penny Token ND Fine Details (Scratches) NGC, BL-15, Wood-Unl, Haxby dies 60+KK. Copper, 34 mm, 21.44 gm. Large flan laminations (no material missing) on both sides.
No blacksmith-style pennies were included in Wood's classic monograph; however, the Baker collection contained a penny, now listed in the Charlton catalog as BL-15 and in the Haxby catalog as dies 60+KK. The present example is the better of two known, the other being lot 1085 in the sale of the Warren Baker collection by Bowers and Marina in March, 1987. While it is theoretically possible that blacksmith pennies could have circulated in parts of Canada and the United States, conclusive evidence that they did remains elusive.
