Lower Canada. Banque Du Peuple. "Rebellion" Sou Token 1837, Br-716 MS62 Brown NGC, LC-4A2, Courteau-14, 8.25 gm. Coinage alignment.
The Banque Du Peuple (Bank of the People) was opened in Montreal in 1835 by reformists. When the bank issued its first token in 1837, engraved by Jean-Marie Arnault, the reverse design was found to include a small star and Liberty cap tucked among the large maple leaves. Because of the political unrest of the period and the belief that the small Liberty symbols were incorporated at the instigation of the bank's directors, the type was termed the "Rebellion Sou".
