Upper Canada. Lesslie 2 Pence Token 1822, Br-717 AU55 Brown NGC, UC-3, 28.67 gm. These tokens are scarce in general and rare in states of preservation above VF.
Lesslie & Sons were druggists and booksellers. They operated in York (later changed to Toronto), Dundas and Kingston. They first struck halfpennies bearing their name in 1824. The date of production of the 2 penny piece has not been determined, except that it was definitely no later than 1827. Jack Griffin once told us that the disappearance of the higher denomination token was hastened by the fact that its diameter exactly fit the standard size pipe used for farm water pumps and the tokens were cut out in the center and used for washers in the pumps.
