Province of Canada. Bank of Montreal / City Bank Mule Penny 1837 AU58 Brown NGC, Br-Unl, PC-2A1. Copper, coinage alignment, 19.07 gm. Reverse die off center to the left. Double-struck – note the shaving of letters and doubling of the incuse CITY BANK on the ribbon ends. Rough flan surfaces, as made. Parts of the legend poorly struck up. This the first of a group of pieces we have identified that have the reverse die positioned slightly off center.
Haxby Group 6: Long diagonal die scratch to the right of the last A in CANADA. Cracks to the A of BANK and through the N of PROVINCE to the chimney. The crack through the N is clear all the way to the chimney. Rust mark at the top left side of the O of BANK OF MONTREAL. Coinage die alignment.
