THRACIAN KINGDOM. Lysimachus (305-281 BC). AR tetradrachm (28mm, 16.89 gm, 11h). NGC Choice AU★ 5/5 - 5/5, Fine Style. Colophon or Pergamum, ca. 287-282 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΛYΣIMAXOY, Athena enthroned left, holding Nike crowning royal name in right hand, left arm resting on shield, spear behind; crescent to inner left, pentagram on throne. Thompson --. Muller --. This symbol combination seemingly unrecorded.
The control placement seen here, a pentagram on the throne and a crescent in the inner left field, can be found on drachms of the Alexander type attributed to Colophon in Ionia; however, they have so far not been recorded on a tetradrachm. Colophon is thought to have minted only Alexander-style drachms for Lysimachus, however it may have engaged in a limited striking of tetradrachms; the obverse style, however, is clearly that of Pergamum.
