Ancients
IONIA. Uncertain City. Ca. 680-650 BC. EL third stater or trite (12mm, 4.55 gm). NGC Choice Fine 5/5 - 4/5. Period of the Artemision Find. Blank surface with abstract granulations / Two incuse punches at off-set angles. Cf. Weidauer 7 (Hecte). SNG von Aulock 7761.
The very earliest form of coinage is represented by typeless (blank) globules, carefully weighed to a specific standard, with one or more punch marks on one side, later evolving into a proper "reverse." Nine such "typeless" electrum pieces were among the famous "Artemision Find" in Ephesus in 1904. At least two of these "blank" issues have recently been found to have two or more Greek letters around the other "obverse" edges (see Heritage sale 3020, lot 24985).
