LYDIAN KINGDOM. Alyattes or Walwet (ca. 610-561 BC). EL third stater or trite (12mm, 4.71 gm). NGC XF 3/5 - 4/5. Sardes, ca. 600-580 BC. Head of roaring lion left, radiate globule on forehead, facing [lion head right]; between, Lydian legend, WALWET (mostly off-flan) / Two square punches side by side. Linzalone 1079 (this coin). Weidauer 94. Le Rider, La naissance de la monnaie, pp. 49-57. Very rare! Minor fissure on lion's cheek, otherwise a decent example showing the left-facing lion in its entirety, with traces of inscription visible to left.
While uninscribed third-staters of pre-Croesus Lydia are common, known examples inscribed in the name of the Lydian king Alyattes (WALWET in the ancient Lydian script) were in the single digits until recently, when several examples from an apparent recent find appeared on the market. They remain extremely rare, particularly the third-stater denomination.
