Claudius Marcellus right; triskeles behind / MARCELLVS on right, COS. QVINQ on left, M. Claudius Marcellus walking right, carrying trophy within tetrastyle temple. Crawford 439/1. Sydenham 1147. Claudia 11 and Cornelia 69. Rare. A striking portrait accompanied by hints of red and golden toning.

This type celebrates two events from the career of the moneyer's famous ancestor, Marcus Claudius Marcellus, one of Rome's most outstanding generals during the Hanniballic Wars and consul five times. The triskeles behind the head on the obverse refers to his conquest of Syracuse in 211 BC, the spoils of which rescued Rome from imminent bankruptcy, and the reverse depicts the consul dedicating arms he won by personally slaying the Insubrian chieftain, Britomartus, in Cisalpine Gaul in 222 BC.
