Vespasian (AD 69-79). AE sestertius (34mm, 23.41 gm, 6h). VF. Uncertain Balkan/Thracian mint, ca. AD 72-73. IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M TR P P P COS IIII •, laureate head of Vespasian right / IVDAEA-AVGVST, palm tree in center; Vespasian at left, in military dress, standing right, vertical spear in right hand, parazonium in left, left foot on helmet; captive Judaea at right, seated right on cuirass in attitude of mourning; SC in exergue. RIC -. Hendin -. Lovely green and brown patina with typical light porosity. Small flan adjustment mark near the edge, resulting in inconsequential loss of legend.

This is a truly remarkable coin as it is an entirely new reverse legend in a series that is widely collected and extensively documented. Although the reverse type is well-known, the legend should read IVDAEA CAPTA. What appears to have happened is a merging of the regular Judaea Capta type and legend with part of the legend of VICTORIA AVGVSTI from the same series, but with the reverse type of Victory and the captive Judaea mourning. The result is an unpublished legend of IVDAEA AVGVST. The obverse, displaying what could be interpreted as a small globe at the point of the bust would usually indicate the mint in Lugdunum, however, there are other Flavian issues from the Thracian mint which also display this feature and appears to be a stop to delineate the terminus of the legend. The flan type is also more typical of the uncertain Thracian mint issues, being flatter than the more concave products of the mint in Rome. An exciting opportunity for Judaean collectors and worthy of spirited bidding.
