Caracalla (AD 198-217). AV aureus (20mm, 6.94 gm, 6h). NGC Choice VF 5/5 - 2/5, bent, light graffito. Rome, AD 215. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, laureate and cuirassed bust of Caracalla right, viewed from behind / P M TR P XVIII COS IIII P P, Caracalla, in military dress, standing left, sacrificing over lighted altar before domed temple of Vesta, facing statue of Vesta visible within enclosure behind; behind him stands a flamen (priest), wearing apex, and a child; before him stand two veiled Vestal Virgins with a child between them. RIC --, cf. 272b (different arrangement of figures on reverse). Cohen 350 var. (same). Calicó 2735a (R4). Extremely rare! With a fascinating sacrificial scene, denoting the importance placed on Vesta by this regime. Flan slightly bent and possibly straightened, with a few scuffs in the field and light graffito X before face.
