Bank of Montreal copper 1/2 Penny Token 1838 AU Details (Excessive Surface Hairlines) NGC, LC-10A3, 11 Pailings. A very rare type and seldom encountered so attractive, despite the details designation. Upon reception of the supply of tokens, the bank manager in Montreal was not impressed and returned the entire batch to England for melting, thus the rarity of the type. A similar piece, an NGC AU50 of the same variety, realized a hammer of $3,750 in our 2012 Long Beach auction (sale 3020, lot 23379).
